Distinguished Award

Leadership Studies affiliate faculty member, Billy Boulden, is receiving a distinguished award.

Our very own affiliate faculty member, Billy Boulden, recently received a distinguished award from the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (AFA). Besides teaching in Leadership Studies, Billy is also the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Sorority and Fraternity Engagement here at Iowa State University.

What award was presented?

During the December 8 – 11, 2025, AFA Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada, Billy was awarded the Sue Kraft Fussell Distinguished Service Award. This honor is presented annually to five people who have “exhibited outstanding achievements in service to the fraternity/sorority industry or AFA.”

In the AFA’s words:

“Billy Boulden, a ‘Culture Curator’ specializing in college student leadership and harm reduction, has served in leadership roles for multiple organizations, including supporting the Iowa State fraternity/sorority community since 2013. His previous roles include positions at Florida State University, Longwood University, and Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity.

Originally from Glen Allen, Virginia, Boulden earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Christopher Newport University, a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University, and is pursuing a doctorate in Education at Iowa State.”
